CHAPTER 10

Wednesday, May 20, 1942

8:27 PM

A farm outside of Seymour, Indiana

The flower truck left Fort Knox just before three-thirty, and after a short stop at the funeral home, traveled north on U.S. Highway 31 through Louisville, across the Ohio River, and into Indiana. After stopping for gas in Jeffersonville, the three men who’d been standing under the maple tree at the graveside service piled back into the big International truck and kept going north. It was almost eight when they turned left on Highway 50, drove through Seymour, made a right, and then rumbled across flat farmland through two covered bridges before turning left onto another rural road and traveling northeast ten more miles across flat farmland.

“Hope they find someplace to land soon,” Clay Barnes grumbled from behind the steering wheel. “We’re getting low on fuel. The old Buick just guzzles it.”

Helen Meeker, still dressed in her black funeral outfit, leaned against the passenger door and studied the truck, its bed covered by a canopy. This was no Sunday drive. It was obvious the driver had a set goal in mind. But how far would he go? She’d figured the drop-off point would be much closer to Fort Knox, so the length of this jaunt surprised her. Just as she was about to glance over and check the Buick’s gas gauge, the International’s single brake light flashed on, and the old rig slowed. Finally, it looked as though they were arriving at the promise land.

The hope of discovery caused Meeker to stiffen and look toward Barnes. His face, showing no emotion, was illuminated a strange shade of yellow by the dash lights. Though he didn’t show it, she knew he was as ready for action as she was. Stating the obvious, Meeker noted, “They’re turning right. Looks like a lane leading to a farm. I’ll keep an eye on the truck as we drive by. Just keep going until our car is out of their view. We’ve managed to not be noticed so far, but I’d hate to have them pick up on their tail now.”

As directed Barnes drove the dark Buick down the gravel road and around a curve. He then pulled the sedan into a lane used by tractors to enter a cornfield. After he’d shut off the straight-eight cylinder engine, Meeker outlined the plan.

“This would be a lot easier if Becca, Alison, and I didn’t have on dresses and heels, but we need to cut across the fields and come in from the back in order not to be spotted. Once we’re on the property, we’ll figure out where the truck is and watch the unloading party.”

“Are we going to take them into custody?” Barnes asked. He was obviously itching for a confrontation.

As she slipped her gun inside her dress’s belt, Meeker shook her head. “I’d rather find out who’s in charge and then have Alison give the information to the FBI. After all, we’re not officially alive, so I’m not sure we need to apprehend anyone right now.
